Bethan Ash - quilt artist profile

Bethan's formal training was in fashion design. After working in the fashion industry and the birth of her son, she discovered quilt making as an artistic medium that best expressed her personal vision and is inspired by a number of different sources including; contrast, movement, love of colour/texture, structure, humour, circumstances and everyday occurrences. These elements combined with the selectivity of memory and the activity of quilting produce the final work.

Her work, while based in the tradition of quilt making, has become more akin to collage. Most of her quilts are non-representational, abstractions, spatial relationships and colour are the backbone of her work. She works improvisationally and believes that treating the fabric like paper collage allows for greater design freedom, therefore making it more exciting to create.

Over the last twenty years she has completed many commissions, won International awards for her work and has exhibited extensively, both in group and one-man shows in the UK and Internationally.

Her work can be found in public and private collections and in 2002 her quilt 'Chasing the Dragon' was selected by The Museum of Arts and Design for their textile collection and touring exhibition - 'Six Continents of Quilts'.

In 2007 Bethan has been invited to exhibit with the American Craft Society at their exhibition, CRAFTBOSTON in the World Trade Center, Boston, USA. At this time she is working on new work for the group Quilt Arts next touring exhibition, which opens in Llanidloes, Wales in the summer of 2007.
